Review – The Death of Doctor Strange: Avengers #1

Earth’s Mightiest Heroes vs. Magic

The Sorcerer Supreme is dead. Now, the Marvel Universe is vulnerable. The Death of Doctor Strange: Avengers #1 explores the immediate fallout. Writer Alex Paknadel teams up with artist Ryan Bodenheim for this tie-in. We previously interviewed writer Alex Paknadel about his work

Does it stand on its own? Or is it just another forgettable event chapter? Let’s dive in.

The Story: Science Meets Sorcery

A Juggernaut-like monster attacks Manhattan. It is made of pure magic. The Avengers—Captain America, Thor, Captain Marvel, and Iron Man—step up to stop it.

However, they have a problem. They usually rely on Doctor Strange for these threats. Without him, they are fighting blind.

The issue focuses heavily on Tony Stark. He is a man of science. He hates what he cannot explain. Watching him try to “solve” a magical construct is the highlight of the book. It adds a fun layer of conflict to the usual punching and blasting.

This issue ties directly into The Death of Doctor Strange #1.

The Art and Action

Ryan Bodenheim’s art is gritty and detailed. The action scenes feel heavy and dangerous. The monster looks terrifying as it tears through the city.

The colors by Rachelle Rosenberg are also fantastic. They make the magical energy pop against the city background. It is a great-looking comic that feels like a summer blockbuster.

The Verdict

Tie-in comics are often hit-or-miss. Thankfully, this one is a hit.

Paknadel writes a smart script that respects the characters. He finds a unique angle by focusing on Iron Man’s skepticism. The action is big, the stakes feel real, and the art delivers.

If you are reading the main Death of Doctor Strange event, this is a must-read. Even if you aren’t, it is a solid Avengers story on its own.

Score: 4/5
