Issue 1

Lady and the Tramp meet Silence of the Lambs. It’s scary being the new dog.

Sophie can’t remember what happened. She doesn’t know how she ended up in this house. She doesn’t recognize any of these other dogs. She knows something terrible happened, but she just… can’t…recall… WAIT! Where’s her lady?

A five-issue Don Bluth-style suspense thriller by My Little Pony comic artists TONY FLEECS and TRISH FORSTNER, STRAY DOGS is Lady and the Tramp meets Silence of the Lambs.

Writer: Tony Fleecs

Poor Sophie is a very nervous shot and from the first few pages when she goes to the vet for a shot she seems scared of her own shadow. She wakes up in a strange house surrounded by a lot of different breeds of dogs. They are all very friendly and the leader, Rusty, shows her around the house and gardens but she’s so nervous she wets the carpet. The rest of the dogs make fun of her but Rusty takes her under his wing.

Later on, she’s hiding under a table when the master provides her with a scarf to cheer her up, this triggers her memory of the master strangling her former owner.

Fleecs has created quite a bizarre world, we have the bubblegum chat between the dogs but there’s a current of horror and suspense in the issue.

Artist: Trish Forstner

Forstner makes this a dogs eye view comic, with humans face just out of sight a-la Charlie Brown which makes Sophie constantly stressed around any humans. The 1980s cartoon style mix between Don Bluth and Disney allows each dog to have a personality based on size, breed and expressions.

The art is bright and full of colour, with the strangulation scenes a much darker black and red to raise the tone and suspense

Overall Thoughts

BGCP are a little late to the party with the early 2021 release, but there is a satisfaction binging a whole mini-series and from the amazing reviews and feedback I’ll have all five reviewed and live within the week. It’s a strange phenomenon that appeals to dog lovers who enjoy a good murder mystery.

T'was a cold dark night in East Kilbride... and below the roundabouts, something old and ancient began to shudder awake. The world would rue the day that it gave the Green Jaguar comics to read!
