New Feature for Netflix: Is it bad?

Who's Watching? - Dad, Ex-Boyfriend, Me, Ex-sis-in-law. Manage Profiles.
Netflix’s Profile screen

As someone who loves the fact that Netflix has the ability to have different profiles, and though they didn’t seem to mind password sharing, it turns out that may be changing. Certain Netflix users have begun to receive a message while trying to stream content on the service. The message reads: “If you don’t live with the owner of this account, you need your own account to keep watching.” The testing of this current feature for Netflix is to implement the limiting of password sharing.

The company will attempt to have the user who is sharing a password, but does not live in the same household, sign up for a new account. From a business perspective, this makes sense. If multiple people are sharing the same account but do not live in the same household then Netflix potentially loses out on quite a bit of money.

Fierce Competition

Although Netflix has over 200 million subscribers worldwide, there is some very fierce competition out there. Disney+. Apple TV+, HBO Max, and Peacock to name but a few. Paramount have also released a streaming service (as with Apple and Disney they appear to have just stuck a “+” at the end. Very original). With Disney+ launching in November of 2019, they’ve already amassed more than 100 million subscribers. So, it’s easy to understand why Netflix would batten down the hatches to stop people from sharing passwords.

At this moment, it is still unclear if new feature for Netflix will expand beyond the testing phase. It seems that only TV’s are being affected by this test. Mobile phones appear to be safe for now. The basic plan for Netflix is currently priced at $8.99/£5.99 with the standard and most popular plan now $13.99/£8.99 due to price increase. With the standard package, users are able to watch on two screens at a time. So it seems that the plan would be to ensure that those two screens are located under the same roof.
