Synopsis

Chocolate, vanilla, existential horror, drug addiction, musical fantasy…there’s a flavour for everyone’s misery. ICE CREAM MAN (ICM) is a genre-defying comic book series featuring disparate ‘one-shot’ tales of sorrow, wonder, and redemption. Each instalment features its own cast of strange characters, dealing with their own special sundae of suffering. And on the periphery of all of them, like the twinkly music of his colourful truck, is the Ice Cream Man- a weaver of stories, a purveyor of sweet treats. Friend. Foe. God. Demon. The man who, with a snap of his fingers-lickety-split!-can change the course of your life forever. Written by W. MAXWELL PRINCE (ONE WEEK IN THE LIBRARY), with art by MARTÍN MORAZZO (GREAT PACIFIC) and CHRIS O’HALLORAN (GENERATION GONE).

This!!

Can you help Jerry? Dial 555-1234 and help a poor guy out. He’s literally falling apart as you read this comic and you are sitting there flipping pages!

Writing

ICM 24 starts at the bottom with tooth extraction and goes downhill from there! Poor Jerry has no luck, his wife left him and divorced, he’s losing his job and his health is at rock bottom…Dial 555-1234 or Rosco the border collie gets it as well!

Prince’s writing is as dark, thought-proving and ultimately pointless as needed in this issue. The telethon and sponsored adverts really hit home and with a lifeline to call or contact substance abuse organisations like Shatterproof.org, there is a serious message within this dark tale. In the UK, if you feel affected by this issue or even this review please reach out to someone or chat to Frank.

Artwork

Martin Morazzo and Chris O’Halloran are masters of their craft. Each page sings with misery and schadenfreude as the ICM delights in Jerry’s descent and the tempo and use of mirrored panels to repeat and focus the message draws the reader down into the depths of misery.

Overall Thoughts

Drug addiction and abuse is a growing problem! We all know or are someone struggling with alcohol, soft or hard abuse. If this comic helps to raise awareness and save one life it’s done more than many to highlight and chat about it using a safe medium. I think this issue deserves a clean sweep of 5 stars out of 5!

T'was a cold dark night in East Kilbride... and below the roundabouts, something old and ancient began to shudder awake. The world would rue the day that it gave the Green Jaguar comics to read!
