The Rise of….Bob!

In this action-packed adventure set in the universe of The Resistance, Gregg Hurwitz (Legends of the Dark Knight, Vengeance of Moon Knight), Mark Texeira (Ghost Rider, Wolverine), and Brain Reber (X-Men: Legacy, Spider) introduce a masked vigilante for the 21st Century. Bob Ryder is a hapless bureaucrat whose bad luck streak comes to a crescendo when he accidentally kills the city’s masked vigilante, The Knight. Oops. Now, Bob is forced to take on the mantle of the legendary hero before the city descends into chaos. Good thing he’s got The Knight’s former butler/assistant to show him the ropes.

Writer: Gregg Hurwitz

Bob’s having a bad day his girlfriend turns down his proposal, he’s mugged by a couple of enhanced thugs and he accidentally kills a peeping tom Super Hero called The Knight. After his car turns up takes him back to his lair the fun begins!

I think Hurwitz’s flip on the entitled billionaire superhero is an intriguing read. No matter what anybody says Batman, Green Arrow and Iron Man are all rich, assholes who indulge their fantasies rather than using their mental scars to improve the world. The schmuck loser that greatness is imposed on is always more interesting, it’s why Spiderman is such an endearing character.

The story has hints of a world ravished by a pandemic, the rise of an underclass of white fascists as well as the 21st-century police state all linked by the 5%ers.

Texeira’s artwork adds a perfect 60s or 70s origin story feel while updating it to modern styling and Easter Eggs. The “death” of The Knight, a perv who has hooked a grapple around a hospital gas main to allow him to google the nurses changing is perfect split-second pathos.

Overall Thoughts

Stories like the Boys, Invincible and now Knighted help knock superheroes off the pedestal we’ve put them on as a society. The idea that mask vigilantes, ignored by police, are not part of the problem but the solution should shock many but instead, we praise it. This is a breath of fresh air.

T'was a cold dark night in East Kilbride... and below the roundabouts, something old and ancient began to shudder awake. The world would rue the day that it gave the Green Jaguar comics to read!
