Another issue and another three short sharp tales showing the boys over at Marvel and DC how you handle a BWR title. Three tales Proelium Finalis, Edible (ahem) and Listen Close.

So gather round and listen close, as I tell you of the greatest warrior to walk the earth. Her name was Red Sonja…

In Proelium Finalis an ageing warrior queen faces off against an ancient foe and their armies. At the spearhead of the defending army, she will show no mercy and all shall fall at her blade. This is classic Hyborian lore, with Sonja recounting her life and her purpose.

Edible tells of Sonja helping a village who summoned her by a falcon. A nearby bog is causing concern with many men and now a young child going missing. The horror of the tale may stop you from ever eating mushrooms again.

Listen Closely shows a father recounting the tale of Sonja on the trail of a Gorgon, a creature that turns all men who look at it to stone. Will Sonja succumb and who exactly is King Ass-man?

all three tales hit the mark squarely with listen closely the strongest of them.

Artists: Will Robson, Natalie Nourigat, Jonboy Meyers

You can’t have a Red Sonja tale without two main red factors her hair and the blood of her enemies and all the artistic talent promote both of these assets to their highest levels. Nourigat’s second story Edible is a hilarious but perfectly drawn, cartoon-style tale with simple linework that shows just what you can do with the character with a good script and a great artist.

The two other tales are fully brought to life with this sterling work of the colourists and letterers using the minimal palette to fully add another dimension to the stories.

Overall Thoughts

Another month, and another great issue with no tales used as page stuffers. This black, white and red format seems to allow the essential Red Sonja to shine through and become the full focus of the issue. Dynamite as usual has used an amazing cosplayer for the photo cosplay cover as well.

T'was a cold dark night in East Kilbride... and below the roundabouts, something old and ancient began to shudder awake. The world would rue the day that it gave the Green Jaguar comics to read!
