Intro
In Time Before Time, it’s the year 2140, and to escape a world with no future, many turn to the Syndicate, a criminal organization who, for the right price, will smuggle you back in time to a better life. After working for the Syndicate for years, Tatsuo and Oscar decide to steal one of their boss’s time machines—but soon find that the one thing you can’t run from is your past.
Writing
Writer/Artist Declan Shalvey joins up with fellow writer Rory McConville and the pair introduce us to to their own take on time travel in a new ongoing series published by Image Comics. As with any time travel story there will be comparisons. As a result we can see similarities to the 2012 film ‘Looper’. But do not let this detract you from the story, which stands itself. The pace of the story moves perfectly and it doesn’t feel rushed at any point. It is gripping and full of twists which certainly draws you in and I am excited to see where this goes.
Artist
Artist Joe Palmer teams up again with the artistic talents from ‘Write it in Blood’, Colourist Chris O’Halloran and Letterer Hassan Otsmane – Elhaou and they again smash this one out the park. The artwork matches the writing of this book perfectly and although the tone of the story is dark and gritty, the soft colouring is gorgeous throughout. The flow of the panels is seamless and the whole thing is a joy to read.
Overall
Comparisons to Looper aside, this is a really enjoyable story and I am looking forward to the rest of the series. Shalvey & McConville bring their own take on Time Travel and the storyline leaves you in suspense wanting more. Well written and matched perfectly with glorious artwork, this is a book I am happy to recommend. Fans of Time Travel and mystery, be sure to pick this up!
