New ‘Mortal Kombat’ Red-Band Trailer Breaks Viewing Records

The trailer has reportedly surpassed superhero juggernauts Logan and Deadpool 2 as the most watched Red band trailer of all time.

Since the release of New Line’s Mortal Kombat red band trailer on the 18th of February, fans have been lapping it up. The trailer has allegedly surpassed the view count for the trailers of R-Rated superhero giants Logan and Deadpool 2.

Reportedly it has trended on YouTube in 52 total markets with a 24,000:513 like to dislike ratio. It has also trended in 28 total markets on Twitter, registering a 98% Positive-to-Neutral social sentiment rating. Stat tracker website RelishMix noted that the viral reposting rate for Mortal Kombat is incredibly high with a 47:1 ratio.

The positive response from fans to the trailer is a change from the usual lukewarm reception faced by other videogame to movie adaptations, as the trailer has had 116 million views within its first week. Mortal Kombat’s success lies with the fact that so many fan favourites made an appearance in the trailer, like Sub-Zero, Scorpion, and Raiden.

In terms of famous fans, the trailer caught the attention of the Backstreet Boys’ Nick Carter:

With so many iconic characters the movie appears to be a faithful adaptation of the video game series. The hard R-rating also means that we will most likely see the brutal fatalities we have all come to expect from the series brought to life.

The only issue that fans have with the trailer is the lack of appearance from wise cracking series icon Johnny Cage. Johnny has been one of the main characters in the Mortal Kombat since the first game back in 1992, yet he is no where to be found in new Mortal Kombat trailer. Fan reaction was so strong to the lack of Cage in the trailer that the fighters name was trending on social media.

Many fans are calling for WWE champion the Miz to play the cocky action star. Noticing the attention, he was getting, the wrestler tweeted at Mortal Kombat suggesting: “call my agent.” However, there is no indication the Miz or anyone else has been approached for the role.

Mortal Kombat is directed by Simon McQuoid with a screenplay by Greg Russo and Dave Callaham. From the trailer it appears that the film will tell a whole new story following a mixed martial artist named Cole Young who’s being hunted down by Sub Zero and the Lin-Kuei clan of assassins. Not knowing why he’s been targeted, Cole seeks out a group of fighters that were chosen to defend Earthrealm against the forces of Outworld.

The film stars Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Josh Lawson as Kano, Tadanobu Asano as Raiden, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero, Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion, Max Huang as Kung Lao, Sisi Stringer as Mileena, and Daniel Nelson as Kabal.

Mortal Kombat will be released in theaters and on HBO Max on April 16. This news comes to us from Deadline.
