Synopsis

BILL MARCHES INTO THE HEART OF DARKNESS!
Beta Ray Bill takes a bloody path to find his glory – and the perfect weapon to forge it with! And he’s even got a few friends to brave the battle alongside him. But the journey is one even Odin would call treacherous…and not all of Bill’s friends will survive. At least not in the form you know. Daniel Warren Johnson and colourist Mike Spicer will break Bill’s heart – and yours! Rated T+ for big kids.

Writing

Wait.. have you bothered to read my other reviews of the BRB series so far, no? Why not, here they are.

Johnson is very slightly mad, I think, in a good way. Each issue he manages to squeeze a little more juice out of a horse-faced Thor, his sentient ship and the ragtag band of bit characters that follow him. Perhaps his madness has gone too far as we have a hot sexy robot version of Scuttlebutt here. I’m always worried when a robot somehow sprouts mammary glands and a thicc butt as they have no evolutionary reason other than 15-year-old boys.

But parking the more butt than scuttle let’s dive into hell and catch up. Odin has sent Bill to source Surtur’s weapon, Twilight, in the depths of Muspelheim. But through magic, the ship evolves an independent female consciousness just as they are attacked by Surtur’s cult.

We get some cool blaster action in the ship as well as an off the chart weirdness that is the spaceship transforming into a ship-ship to sail on the lava. To cap things off sexy ‘butt gives Bill and new weapon to help him get his new weapon, but can they survive what lives in the depths of Muspelheim to forge it?

Artwork

Johnson and Spicer are having loads of fun with this (see the T-R-A-N-S-F-O-R-M image above) and I can only think that Johnson needs to draw what was in the script as no other artists took it seriously. The fiery Muspelheim burns from the page with Spicer’s colours and as with the previous issues get your spyglass out to look for hull-cross sections and Easter eggs.

Overall Thoughts

Another ping-pong issue (ahem) with guns, girls and guts spilling action. Apart from the robo-boobs n butt, this is the highlight of my week. The creative team take a bow three nose bleed issues in a row. Another, almost, flawless issue

T'was a cold dark night in East Kilbride... and below the roundabouts, something old and ancient began to shudder awake. The world would rue the day that it gave the Green Jaguar comics to read!
