Introduction

Celebrate the 50th anniversary of the master with a brand-new comic starring fan-favourite Missy! With a secret photo cover and three alternatives covers from fan favourites David Buisan, Claudia Caranfa and Roberta Ingranata.

Missy’s up to her old tricks, but this time she’s not alone! How will the doctor survive this latest maniacal plot in this special story celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Master? Featuring the third and twelfth doctors battling their Iconic nemesis! Keep your eyes out for other time lords!

Writing/Story

Issue #1 of this four-issue limited series is a delight from cover to cover! Houser balances the camp Missy’s personality to a tee and with flashes of Pertwee’s third Doctor and Anthony Ainley’s Master, this will be a collectors dream! We’ve yet to see Capaldi’s 12th Doctor but we won’t have to wait long for issue 2.

Deep in the Stormcage Containment Facility the warden receives a call from a worried third regeneration ensuring that the Master is still sagely behind bars. The bored warden ignores the pleas and just as her terminates the call Missy walks in. Wearing a stunning question mark outfit she announces “I am Doctor Who!”

I’ll leave the action there or River Song will be after me for Spoilers!

Too Late!

Artwork

Roberta Ingranata’s artwork is amazing in this issue! She faithfully recreates the amazing Michelle Gomez (no easy feat) and all of her Missy facial expressions and gesticulations. Her previous work on Witchblade and the main Doctor Who title have shown just how many skills she has!

Balancing the 1970s and the 2010s versions of The Doctor and The Master look effortless in her hands and the full page panels show Missy at her evil best! I always feel the best way to enjoy a comic is a quick read to absorb the story and then a detailed panel by panel reading to absorb all work the writer and artist have invested in the comic.

Overall Thoughts

Whovians will love this issue and it’s a great way to showcase Missy as the main character for this 50th celebration of The Doctor’s favourite enemy! For new fans, this is a great standalone series and you don’t need to read hundreds of back issues to get up to speed with the story.

There is a tonne of merchandise to coincide with the celebration and you can check out some of it at your local comic shop or online at Forbidden Planet. Some very limited T-shirts are left with backprint tour dates of each actor’s episodes!

If the other three issues keep up the pace and stunning visuals this could turn out to be one of the comics of 2021 to read!

T'was a cold dark night in East Kilbride... and below the roundabouts, something old and ancient began to shudder awake. The world would rue the day that it gave the Green Jaguar comics to read!
