Intro

“WELCOME TO HELL”

When mankind first broke through the walls between dimensions, nothing could have prepared them for what they would find in Known Reality Plane 1301-A: it was absolute Hell. Literally. A covert security force was quickly assembled to patrol the Hellplane and ensure that none of the nastier denizens made their way Earthside. They were dubbed the Pan-Dimensional Security Corps.

The HELLCOPS.

Writing

First off let’s note the obvious from the Hellcop book, in that the lead character’s name is VIRGIL. Surely the Irony isn’t lost on readers. But with that aside, the book is enjoyable and Brian Haberlin has an interesting storyline which I hope develops over future issues. The character of Virgil is likeable and has some comedic quips. And certainly Haberlin does some decent character development with him as protagonist.

Artwork

Given that Brian Haberlin is both writer and illustrator for this book, it is no surprise that the artwork matches the nature of the storyline. And thanks to Geirrod Van Dyke’s dark and moody colour palette, the tone is set for the whole book. I enjoyed the panel work and depiction of the various ‘sources’ during Virgil’s search for answers about the mysterious artefact and then that was followed by the hilarious depiction of the cherubs.

Overall

An enjoyable first issue from Image Comics. My only criticism would be that it is very dialogue heavy. But given the storyline, I suppose this is necessary. It has a certain 90’s vibe to it and if you strip the book back to it’s bare bones, it’s essentially a murder/mystery book with some interdimensional travel thrown in for good measure. It’ll be interesting to see where the story goes in future issues.
