Synopsis

What if Magical Girls aren’t Earth’s champions after all? The world’s most beloved heroes Aoe, Thel, and Gen, better known as the Lovely Trio, first burst onto the scene five years ago when they saved Earth from a surprise space monster attack! Since then, everyone–including Gigi, whose brother died as a bystander in a Lovely Trio battle– has idolized them as superheroic pop icons. But when Gigi witnesses the Lovely Trio battling a monster firsthand, she sees something that causes her to question everything she thought she ever knew about her heroes!

Writer: Bones Leopard

Bones get their nerd on here with an amazing first issues blending bits of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Gatchaman and Powerpuff Girls. Gigi is busy playing her favourite game of the Lovely Trio when her brother annoys her to help him out serving in his busy coffee shop.

As she steps outside she collides with a stunningly tall pinked hair woman who manages to catch her. Gigi attempts (badly) to flirt as she runs away only to collide with another tall woman. At the coffee shop, she chats with her brother and Bear the manager when news explodes on social media that the Trio are fighting nearby.

Bear tears off to see their heroes followed by Gigi, however once there she gets caught up in the fight and watches one of the Trio drain a passer by of all energy.

It’s a great relaxing read, and Bones shows with ease how to create a personality within a few lines of dialogue.

Kelly and Michelle have a great Anime meets 70s Saturday Morning Cartoons style. The 8-bit game graphics used on the first 2 pages gives the reader an immediately relatable and familiar feeling. The colours pop bright rainbows from each of the characters and the final showdown between the Trio and the villains are stunning with ethereal forms floating and swimming across the sky. Of all the characters Gigi feels the most human, with a pinch of anarchy.

The onomatopes are hilarious with great examples like Slam, Brace and Swoon used within three panels later on we get another three panel setup with Grab, Doki Doki and Kiss.

Overall Thoughts

I greedily read through this issue in about ten minutes and then had to immediately slow read again to digest all the amazing details, like the onomatopes I missed the first time. It’s bright, fun and puts a smile on your face. I think this one deserves full marks.

T'was a cold dark night in East Kilbride... and below the roundabouts, something old and ancient began to shudder awake. The world would rue the day that it gave the Green Jaguar comics to read!
