Synopsis

Catch up with Shadowman with our previous issue reviews here.

Masters of terror Cullen Bunn and Jon Davis-Hunt continue terrifying tour by bringing the supernatural defender to Barcelona.
What is your darkest secret worth? Shadowman must face demons from his past and demons of the present as he encounters the sinister Undertaker. Will Jack be dragged into a Hell of his making?

Writer: Cullen Bunn

Shadowman is in the run in Barcelona, hunted by the Loa killer. He’s poisoned, even though the Shadow Loa should protect him. In a flashback, scene in Port-Au-Prince, Samedi, Jack and Josef investigate the death of Mama Cecile. Someone is killing human’s who are linked with Loa. Back in Barcelona, Jack is cornered by Loa and confronted by The Pallbearer, using a coffin to trap Loa.

Back in the past, Samedi and Jack, negotiate with a Loa to find out the link between the Blight, Loas and the mysterious woman behind them. Just as Samedi trades his biggest secret his human host is beheaded and as he dies he gives up a shocking secret…but you’ll have to buy the book to get it.

Artwork: Jon Davis-Hunt and Jordie Bellaire

I think this issue has hit a new high with the creative team of Davis-Hunt, Bellaire and Cowles. Each exquisitely drawn panel is then coloured with care and passion, bringing each character to life. Cowles work creating lettering that brings the different voices of characters to life adds the icing on the cake. The discussion between Samedi, Jack and Josef would be boring in any other teams hands, in this issue it is a catalyst for the whole issue.

Bonus – Shadow Man Remastered

He is coming, stalking criminals in the spirit world and the real world. A possessed man is coming, a voodoo mask in his chest and lines of power in his back. Shadow Man is coming, trailing evil from Liveside to Deadside. To stop an apocalypse. To save your soul.

Overall Thoughts

Issue #3 plots can be tricky, you’ve captured your audience in the first few issues, do you keep up the momentum or develop the story and characters? Bunn and the team have carefully balanced this mix with an amazing third issue revealing secrets while ramping up the horror vibe. The Pallbearer character had hints of the WWE Undertaker which I’m sure were deliberate.

T'was a cold dark night in East Kilbride... and below the roundabouts, something old and ancient began to shudder awake. The world would rue the day that it gave the Green Jaguar comics to read!
