Intro

Inspired since 1992 by the series that launched Image Comics, writer and artist JONATHAN LUNA (ALEX + ADA, 20XX) creates an homage to honor its 30th anniversary with THE PHALANX!

Spur, a mercenary in modern-day Los Angeles, chases a mysterious villain and finds herself going through a portal and running into a famous superhero team. They realize they have a common goal.

Writing

Jonathan Luna brings us a homage to Image Comics and even though it is a modern tale, it has the feel of a book that came out in the 90’s. And given that Luna namechecks Todd McFarlane, Erik Larsen and Jim Lee (to name but a few), his book is on par with the level of writing we would expect from those Titans. Luna does well with the pacing of the book and the reader is kept entertained throughout. And thankfully he manages to write the character of Loch Ness without portraying a Scottish person in a slapstick manner.

Artwork

Given that Luna is covering all aspects of the artwork for this book, you could be forgiven for thinking that it may suffer because of this. And let me reassure you that it does not. The artwork has the look and feel of a book that came out 30 years ago whilst still being completely modern. The art itself is crisp and detailed. And the panels just capture the eye and the imagination, drawing the reader in further.

Overall

I can’t remember the last time I picked up a book where the creator covered all aspects of the book. Jonathan Luna does it all in this book and not only that, he does it really well! For a singular person to cover writing, art, colouring and lettering cements what we already know, Luna is a supreme talent. I’m a massive fan of Image Comics and the work they have been doing over the last 30 years and having this book as an homage to the work they have been doing is fitting.
