Intro

A tale of existential familial horror by JAMES TYNION IV (THE DEPARTMENT OF TRUTH, RAZORBLADES) and GAVIN FULLERTON (BOG BODIES, Bags). Thom is moving cross-country with his family and dragging the past along with them. His son, Jamie, is seeing monsters in the bedroom closet and will not let them go.

Writing

When you see that the Juggernaut talent of James Tynion IV has a new book, you immediately sit up an take notice. And what a book it is. Whilst it starts fairly normally with common family problems, you get the feeling that it’s building it up to something. And it’s the panels with young Jamie, where there is no dialogue that will really creep you out. Tynion really knows how to bring the overall feeling of dread to this book.

Artwork

The artwork from Gavin Fullerton is quite subtle in its usage and fits the storyline well. But it’s his detail in facial expressions that really stood out for me. Especially when we see Jamie and the way Fullerton captures the horror on his face. And when you add into the mix the colour work from Chris O’Halloran, which is restrained and adds to the dark undertone of the overall book.

Overall

A thoroughly unsettling book from start to finish. And I loved everything about it. It’s been a while since I’ve read through a book that makes gives you a real feeling of dread. But this brought back memories of being a small child and scared of the dark. This is a book that I would recommend everyone picks up. It’s definitely my book of the week and I can’t wait for the next instalment.
