Review – Black Panther

Review – Black Panther Directed by: Ryan Coogler Written by: Ryan Coogler & Joe Cole Produced by: Stan Lee & Kevin Feige Starring: Chadwick Boseman, Michael B Jordan & Lupita Nyong’o Release Date: February 2nd 2018 (UK) I recently revisited Black Panther for review and it is still pretty great. Chadwick Boseman’s starring role as the titular hero is immense and I really enjoyed how he chose to give a subdued, collected performance in the film. This is something that I didn’t expect the first time that I watched Black Panther. Bearing in mind that the first time that we ever saw this character onscreen was in Civil War and while I understand he was on a revenge quest in that movie, he conveyed an sense of energy that isn’t present in Black Panther. I have since heard that this was a decision made by Chadwick Boseman and Ryan Coogler when they were settling on their vision of who Black Panther should be. There are a lot of stand out performances in the film though Michael B Jordan, (who is a Coogler movie staple at this point,) give us one of the best Marvel villains that we have seen thus far. At the very least, Killmonger had the most believable motivation for doing villainous things that we had seen up until that point in the MCU. The rest of the cast bring their A game too, including Danai Guira, Lupita Nyong’o, Andy Serkis, Daniel Kaluuya, Forest Whittaker, Martin Freeman and Sterling K Brown who are all great here. The costume design and sets are fantastic to look at, but some of the character CGI does look a bit too bouncy and unrealistic. I also feel that the movie drags a bit in the second act and the mid-section of the movie also features a lot of very expositional dialogue, meaning that this is the low point for the movie’s script Lastly, I really enjoy this movie’s soundtrack and feel that it greatly adds to the excitement of certain scenes throughout the movie. In summary, Black Panther is a pretty great entry into the MCU and although it isn’t one of Marvel’s best, it is far from their worst. Star Wars: The Destiny Path

Review – Star Wars: The Destiny Path Written By Charles Soule Illustrated & coloured by Jesus Saiz & Arif Prianto Published by MARVEL Comics Released in November, 2020 SUMMARY Star Wars: The Destiny Path is a 2020 tie in comic set between the events of The Empire Strikes Back & Return of The Jedi, filling in the gaps and answering the questions of a galaxy far far away. Written by Charles Soule and illustrated by Jesus Saiz. With the Rebels on the run from Darth Vader on Cloud City, leaving behind a hand and a Han, it’s up to Luke, Leia & Lando to locate Han Solo and strategize their next move against the Empire. With power and confidence not on their side, there is only hope for our ragtag Rebellion and the intel of one Lando Calrissian.  ART Firstly, Saiz’s art style is bombastically classic looking, especially in dog fights. Conversely, his work during the more sombre and expositional scenes gives the titular characters emotional depth and focus, really capturing the likeness of each beloved character. Solid work! Equally, Arif Prianto and his team of colourists throughout present a galaxy of colour variations and combinations that allow each new planet, setting and character to shine independently with identifiable palettes.  WRITING What could just as easily serve as simple filler between episodes, instead unexpectedly opens up a whole new dynamic dimension within the saga. With interesting character developments for fan favourites as well as brand new characters, there is so much to love about this comic!  The most notable of these character developments is the internal conflict of Luke as he reflects on the shocking revelation of his relation to Daddy Darth Vader. It’s a primary story beat that is surprisingly brushed over by Lucas.  With it being a 2020 release set during the original trilogy, fans will be happy to see some recent additions to the story from Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and The Mandalorian, as well as some PTSD flashbacks to Order 66. It’s incredible how many surrounding plot strings Soule binds together! Crucially, the balance of light and dark is more akin to a pendulous potentium as we learn more about the aftermath of the Death Star’s destruction and the remnants of its humanity within the Empire. In a never-ending war of two factions, there is no peace. OVERALL In conclusion, Star Wars: The Destiny Path is an exciting and audacious addition to the old saga that bridges the dominant favourite film to the first finale through new and expansive lore. Outside of the main story itself, the comic makes for a dramatically fresh take on the deeper Hero’s Journey. Some minor details disrupt the continuity of the films but hell, if Lucas can take leaps in the plot between films, then Soule can take liberties when trying to fix them! Furthermore, a benefit of Lucas leaving out a lot of detail between films is that these gaps can be filled by a wealth of new writers, more often than not with a blissful nostalgia for the galaxy before them. This destiny is far from fulfilled but the path is clear and promises a masterclass in balancing the new and old. Star Wars Doctor Aphra: Fortune & Fate

SUMMARY Star Wars Doctor Aphra: Fortune & Fate is MARVEL’s recent addition to the outer-rim lore of Star Wars, following the adventures of titular character, Doctor Aphra. Written by Alyssa Wong and illustrated by Marika Cresta. Professor by day, Smuggler by night. Indiana Solo? Han Jones? Either way, Doctor Aphra is embarking on her next job with her team of smugglers as well as new and old colleagues. What lies before them comes with the promise of infinite riches, eternal life and the highest price of all; a maddening suicide mission in the depths of an ancient temple.  ART Firstly, the dialogue depicts some of the archaeological sites and artefacts as grander or more intricate than they appear which is a little disappointing given the subject matter. On the other hand, a diverse colour palette throughout by Rachelle Rosenberg allows for a balance between the setting and our main characters. This combined with Cresta’s exceptional illustrative expressions and designs give the reader a clear visual narrative to accompany the story.  WRITING Fittingly, with the Indiana Jones franchise being synonymous with Lucasfilm, it makes perfect sense to have an Indiana Jones type storyline within the Star Wars mythos! Not only as a nod or homage to another of Ford’s badass thrillseekers, but as a welcome extension to a galaxy far, far away. We’ve rarely been introduced to the academia or archaeology of Star Wars.  Apparently, some of the characters are well known within the comic lore of Star Wars and as a fanatic, I’m ashamed to say I don’t recognise any of them. As my official introduction to these existing characters, I think they are neat. Inventive and interesting while remaining familiar and funny.  For an archaeological adventure story, not unlike the Sith academy trials in Knights of The Old Republic, Wong’s writing is for the most part solid but rudimentary. Where the story shines is in its characters, both in their personalities and in motives. The inclusion of an LGBT relationship is also a nice touch that is treated respectfully and realistically.  OVERALL In conclusion, Star Wars Doctor Aphra: Fortune & Fate is a harmlessly engaging comic. I say harmless because the storyline, aside from its prologue, is wholly distant from the original saga in which it is set. This story could stand on its own easily in any era of Star Wars which is neither a good or a bad thing, as is the way of a rogue smuggler.  With no prior knowledge of this spin off comic series or its characters, I recommend this for a quick standalone Star Wars adventure with interesting ideas and a homage to the Indiana Jones franchise. Something familiar but new for your May the Fourth! Review – Darkhawk: Heart of the Hawk #1 Story by Dan Abnett, Kyle Higgins, Danny Fingeroth Art by Le Beau Underwood, Andrea Di Vito, Juanan Ramirez, Mike Manley Colours by Chris Sotomayor, Sebastian Cheng, Erick Arciniega Letters by Travis Lanham Cover by Inhyuk Lee Publisher: Marvel Comics Release Date: 14th April 2021 Introduction 2021 marks the 30th anniversary of Darkhawk’s 1991 debut in Darkhawk 1, a title that ran for 50 issues while the character himself had stints alongside the New Warriors, Avengers, and Guardians of the Galaxy. This is a tribute issue and a hope of things to come! From early 90s action to post-Annihilation plot and finally closing the arc. The issue is way too short, to be honest, but let’s head back to the 90s, find our alien amulet and transmute into DARKHAWK! Stories/Writing Giving us a past, present and future(ish) look at the 90s character that defied the odds and joins Marvel’s teams. During the issue, Chris Powell (Darkhawk) taps into the DATASONG of the amulet and the three stories flow from this lament. The first story, titled “Cry of the City,” is handled by the original Darkhawk creative team of writer Danny Fingeroth and artist Mike Manley, with colours by Chris Sotomayor. It follows Darkhawk as he follows criminal mastermind Phillipe Bazin, before facing off against Savage Steel. Written by the original team of Fingeroth and Manley it plays to the fans! In the second “Long Way From Home,” Powell is wandering a random planet and stumbles into an alien bar. In ten short pages, we get a neat, tidy standalone story showing off Darkhawk in a story with familiar alien baddies . It sits the most comfortable of the three stories and writer Dan Abnett teams up with Andrea Di Vito to draw these pages The final very short five-page story “Last Flight” is a short sombre finale and prelude in one. Finished wearing the amulet, Powell fills the Datasong with his memories to hope the next wearer learns from his mistakes. It’s both a moving and sad chapter to a fan favourite character. Writer Kyle Higgins and artist Juanan Ramírez fill the space with both hopelessness and hope at the same time. Artwork The three vignettes are designed well and fans will recognise the first splash page from issue 1 as a tribute to the style and writing of early 90s comics. De Vito and Ramírez though show their talent in the final 15 pages of the comic. It’s beautiful, desolate and action-packed with modern imagery and panelling. It’s amazing to show this action next to this more realistic artwork and shows you just how far comics have come in 30 short years! We are now as far from the 90s as the 90s was from the late 50s and early 60s artwork! Overall Thoughts This is a quick 12-minute read but worth it as it hints at things to come for both Marvel and Darkhawk. For fans of the hero, it’s a must-buy, but and for others, it’s a good sedge way into a character that fans love but many mainstream fans may not have heard of. If all else fails many will buy it for the stunning Lee cover that collectors will snap up and seal into CGC plastic for eternity! Thor: The Dark World Review – MCU’s Worst Movie?

Is Thor: The Dark World worth watching in your MCU marathon? We review the flawed sequel, analyzing its forgettable villain, tonal issues, and why it is often ranked as the worst Marvel movie. The Verdict at a Glance Introduction: The MCU’s Identity Crisis In the grand tapestry of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Thor: The Dark World (2013) occupies a difficult spot. Sandwiched between the Shakespearean drama of the first Thor and the psychedelic comedy of Thor: Ragnarok, this sequel struggles to find its footing. While it was a financial success, critical and fan reception has soured over the years. Is it simply a skippable chapter, or is it a fundamental misstep in Marvel history? This review breaks down why the God of Thunder’s second solo outing is widely considered the franchise’s “black sheep.” The Plot: A Generic Fantasy Slog The story picks up post-Avengers, with Thor (Chris Hemsworth) bringing order to the Nine Realms. However, an ancient enemy returns: Malekith (Christopher Eccleston) and his Dark Elves, who seek a weapon known as the Aether (the Reality Stone) to plunge the universe into eternal darkness. When Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) accidentally absorbs the Aether, she becomes a target, forcing Thor to bring her to Asgard and eventually team up with his treacherous brother, Loki (Tom Hiddleston). Where It Went Wrong Malekith: The “Who?” of Marvel Villains The film’s fatal flaw is its antagonist. Christopher Eccleston is a fantastic actor, yet he is buried under prosthetics and given zero character depth. Malekith has no relatable motivation—he simply wants to destroy the universe because he likes the dark. In an era of complex villains like Thanos or Killmonger, Malekith is shockingly one-dimensional and entirely forgettable. A Tonal Mess The Dark World tries too hard to be “Game of Thrones” in space. It abandons the fish-out-of-water charm of the first movie but lacks the bold, colorful humor that Taika Waititi would later bring to the franchise. The result is a movie that feels gray, dreary, and overly serious without the emotional weight to back it up. The Wasted Talents of Natalie Portman Jane Foster is reduced to a plot device. Rather than an active participant, she spends the majority of the film as a living vessel for the MacGuffin (The Aether), fainting or being carried from room to room. It is no surprise that Portman took a long hiatus from the MCU after this entry; the script gave her nothing to do. Boring Exposition Much of the dialogue consists of characters explaining fantasy pseudoscience to one another. The pacing drags significantly in the second act, making the 1 hour and 52-minute runtime feel much longer. The Saving Graces It isn’t all bad. Here is what keeps the movie watchable: Final Thoughts: Essential Viewing Only for Completionists Thor: The Dark World is a film that checks boxes rather than telling a compelling story. It introduces an Infinity Stone (The Aether), but fails to make us care about the journey. If you are doing a full MCU rewatch, you might feel obligated to sit through it. However, if you are looking for entertainment value, this is easily the most skippable entry in the Infinity Saga. It is a harsh reminder that even Marvel Studios isn’t invincible. Pros: Tom Hiddleston’s Loki; High production value; Important for Avengers: Endgame context. Cons: Forgettable villain; Dull color palette; Weak script; Wasted supporting cast. Review – X-Men: Apocalypse (2016)

Review – X-Men: Apocalypse Directed by: Bryan Singer Produced by: Bryan Singer & Stan Lee Written by: Bryan Singer & Simon Kinberg Starring: James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender & Oscar Isaac Release Date: May 18th 2016 I remember when this movie first released and received very mixed reactions from both critics and fans. At the time, I fell on the more positive side of the fence and actually kind of enjoyed this movie for what it was when I saw it for the first time in the cinema. It is amazing how things change… I revisited X-Men: Apocalypse for review last night and found it very difficult to get through. The year is 1983, 10 years after the last X-Men movie, Days Of Future Past; as in the kind of 10 years where no one ages a day. We know that it is 1983 because some of the young mutants go and see Return Of The Jedi in the cinema. The hairstyles and fashion statements are suitably 80’s, which is actually a very appropriate motif to choose as it adds a more comic book feel to the movie and forces it to stick to a brighter colour palette than some of the previous X men outings. Another positive is the return of Quicksilver, who has another grandiose slow motion scene in the film, but unfortunately it is not as well choreographed as the one in DOFP and somewhat falls flat in comparison. The design of Apocalypse in this movie is something that I just could not get behind. There were points where it took me out of the movie entirely and although Oscar Isaac is a great actor and he does his best with this portrayal of the ancient mutant even he can’t make this film palatable. The other major downside to his character is that he is significantly nerfed in terms of his powers here. He does feel mildly powerful at points, but never overwhelmingly so and when the final confrontation does take place, it feels like he is holding back. This could be explained in a contrived manner by saying that he doesn’t want to kill mutants, because they are all his children, but if the success of his plan depends on it then he shouldn’t even hesitate, he should just wipe all the X-Men out in an instant like we know that he can. The tone is another issue I have with the movie, it is extremely inconsistent throughout and never reaches the level of threat or peril that it is aiming for. However, this isn’t the fault of the cast or the performances they give. MacAvoy and Fassbender stand out here as you would expect, their relationship also remains one of the most interesting parts of the plot. Isaacs’ performance is also suitably threatening and sinister, the only thing lacking in his character other than the odd design choice, is how short he is next to the other mutants. He doesn’t have to be huge like in the comics and cartoons, but making him a little bit more physically imposing with clever camera tricks would have went a long way in adding to the character. Jennifer Lawrence is fine here as usual, even if it does seem like she doesn’t want to be there in certain scenes. Young Cyclops and Jean Grey are perfectly serviceable, although Sophie Turner’s American accent does come and go in certain scenes. Even Peters does his best as Quicksilver and the actress who plays Storm here is also pretty convincing, as is the young English actor who plays Angel. Nightcrawler is also a welcome addition to the roster as I feel that he has been criminally underused since the second X-Men movie and his power set is definitely one of the most interesting in all of the X-Men movies, also the actor playing him here does a good job throughout the film. The special effects are noticeably shabby throughout the film, especially when you remember that this movie came out in the same year as Captain America: Civil War. This was also the last X-Men movie directed by Bryan Singer and knowing what we know now, good riddance. The direction in this movie certainly isn’t anything to write home about anyway and the cinematography is also pretty lazy and by-the-numbers. Overall, upon re-watching X-Men: Apocalypse for review, it has not aged well at all. I don’t often say that about movies that are only five years old, but here we are. If you remember this one being okay back when you first saw it in the cinema, then please don’t do what I did and revisit it because you will only be disappointed. 10 years later, Captain America: Civil War is still the smartest movie Marvel ever made. The Verdict at a Glance The “Empire Strikes Back” of the MCU In 2026, we are living in the aftermath of the Sokovia Accords. With President Thaddeus Ross (Harrison Ford) now transforming into the Red Hulk in Captain America: Brave New World, the events of Civil War have never been more relevant. Released in 2016, this wasn’t just “Captain America 3″—it was “Avengers 2.5.” It took the fun, quippy tone of the franchise and shattered it. It dared to ask: What if the good guys are dangerous? Here is why Civil War remains the gold standard for superhero storytelling. The Villain Who Actually Won Thanos might have erased half the universe, but he eventually lost. Baron Zemo (Daniel Brühl) is the only villain who truly won. He didn’t have a magic rock or a laser beam. He had a grainy VHS tape and patience. By revealing the truth about Tony Stark’s parents, he fractured the Avengers so badly that they lost to Thanos in Infinity War. Watching his quiet, cerebral manipulation today is chilling. The Airport Battle: The Ultimate Comic Book Splash Page We have seen bigger battles since (like Endgame), but we have never seen one this creative. The 17-minute sequence at Leipzig/Halle Airport is a miracle of choreography. It balances 12 heroes perfectly. Ant-Man turning Giant? Spider-Man webbing up Falcon? Hawkeye firing Ant-Man on an arrow? It is pure joy. In 4K HDR, the colors of the costumes against the grey concrete look incredibly sharp. The Debuts of Titans It is easy to forget that this one movie introduced Spider-Man (Tom Holland) AND Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) to the MCU. T’Challa arrives fully formed: regal, dangerous, and driven by vengeance. His chase scene (running faster than cars) is still one of the best practical stunts in the series. And Peter Parker? His clumsy, chatty introduction remains the best version of the character we’ve seen. The Emotional Finale Most superhero movies end with a sky beam. This one ends with a fistfight in a bunker. The final brawl between Steve, Bucky, and Tony isn’t about saving the world; it’s about betrayal. When Tony screams, “He killed my mom,” you feel it. It is arguably the best acting Robert Downey Jr. ever did in the suit. How to Watch: The Definitive Editions To appreciate the details—like the texture of Black Panther’s vibranium suit or the scuff marks on Cap’s shield—you need the physical disc. ? The Best Experience: Captain America: Civil War (4K Ultra HD) The 4K transfer is a significant upgrade over streaming. The airport scene (shot on IMAX cameras) fills the screen, and the Dolby Atmos audio track makes the clash of Vibranium vs. Repulsors sound terrifyingly real. ? The Source Material: “Civil War” by Mark Millar The movie is very different from the comic, but the original 2006 book is a classic. It features the Fantastic Four and X-Men (who weren’t in the movie) and a much darker ending. ? The “Choose Your Side” Merch Are you Team Cap or Team Iron Man? This movie divided the fanbase, and the merchandise lets you pick a side. Final Thoughts Captain America: Civil War is a masterpiece of tension. It proves that you don’t need an alien invasion to create high stakes—you just need characters you care about trying to kill each other. If you are watching Thunderbolts* or Captain America: Brave New World in 2026, you must revisit this film. It is the origin story for the modern MCU’s political chaos. Review – Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 1

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 1Writer: Al Ewing Artist: Juann Cabal Colourist: Frederico Blee Publisher: Marvel Release Date: 2020 Guardians of the Galaxy is back in 2020 with a refreshing revamp from Immortal Hulk writer, Al Ewing. This collection, #1-5, has a very different feel to the previous comics I have read, which, I will be honest, is only a handful. I tried them after watching the films and I just couldn’t get into the comics. This is most likely due to my lifestyle at the time, rather than the quality of the comics. With kids, dogs, horses and house stuff for instance, all coming first. Sadly, sitting down with a good book and putting my feet up with a cuppa, was not on the cards. That said, a good book can captivate, as a result I have to accept the previous comics, just didn’t do it for me! Therefore, when these new ones came out, I was intrigued. I really enjoy some of Al Ewing’s work, and I have read only great things about Juann Cabal, therefore, my interest was piqued. They have garnered favourable reviews and for good reason. Peace at last? This is the first collection in the new series written by Al Ewing and it’s excellent. The Guardians of the Galaxy are back as we know them, post Endgame film and everyone is just getting back to “normal” after the Universal Church of Truth massacre that laid out the Galaxy in the last GotG series, written by Donny Cates. Finally the team are having some down time, peace at last in the Galaxy, we all know that won’t last. Al Ewing, can’t help but be fast paced and picks up the story quickly. The team are soon called upon to help defeat the Olympian gods, gone bad! The team is spilt, well Gamora wants out and peace, Quill and Rocket know they need to help and go ahead with the team, negative Gamora, to help. I won’t say anymore or I will have to divulge spoilers! But this is not just an awesome comic for action but it’s an emotional rollercoaster too. I want to read more, there has to be a resolve to this heartbreaking, personal story line… you know the gif that would suit this comic to the ground… the Chris Pratt one, y’all know the one I am talking about! Art and colouring The art work by Juann Cabal is superb and the colouring by Frederico Blee is a brilliant match for Cabals stunning drawings. It gives the comic and the characters an interesting new look. For example Rocket Raccoon in an suit?! It’s fantastic, I would never have imagined it and yet it works, it’s really cool. Quills slicked back hair I didn’t particularly like but hey that’s personal choice. The other characters got a funky reboot and the Olympian gods have a really epic feel. Overall I am impressed with this comic, it’s a team every man and his dog knows thanks to the films, it doesn’t feel a million miles away but does give the characters a fresh feel, there are a few small quibbles and questions I am left wanting answers for but I can forgive them as it’s left a little to our imagination as to how the characters would react and that’s would be fine but I have a thousand ideas on how the characters would respond to what has happened, so I am looking forward to seeing what happens next. Review – Thor: Ragnarok

Review – Thor: Ragnarok Directed by: Taika Waititi Written by: Craig Kyle & Christopher Yost Produced by: Stan Lee & Kevin Feige Starring: Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston & Mark Ruffalo Release Date: October 24th 2017 (UK) Last night, I re-watched Thor: Ragnarok for review to see how well it holds up a few years on from its release. While there is still a very fun movie to be enjoyed here, it is far from perfect. I wonder if the filmmakers were so paranoid about not churning out another formulaic, checklist of a Marvel movie after the snooze-fest that was the Dark World, that they just chucked a whole bunch of disparate ideas into this mixing pot of a film and hoped that some of it would work. To some extent they were right; some of it does work, but some of it really doesn’t. The stuff that doesn’t work would probably work okay in a separate movie, but here it just provides a lack of cohesion and brings a jolting change of tone to many of the film’s scenes. The abrupt tonal shift that takes place whenever we change environments is one of my biggest issues when going back to re-watch the film. Some plot elements also feel rushed in the film, which means that less emotional impact is felt overall by the audience at the climax of each plot thread. The plot elements of Ragnarok could have been split across a few movies and it would mean that certain characters wouldn’t have been wasted and that the big events that take place would have had more weight and gravitas to them, instead of just being brushed off in favour of getting to the next punch-line. For example, Odin dies in this film and Thor and Loki deal with it and move on in a matter of seconds. There are no emotional repercussions felt whatsoever. Another example of this is the Warriors Three appearing in a single scene, having no dialogue and then being killed in a matter of seconds of being onscreen. Additionally, a character arc is attempted with Skurge, but again Karl Urban is onscreen for such a small amount of time that no resolution is felt following his sacrifice at the end of the movie. As soon as Cate Blanchett starts to show some potential as a memorable Marvel villain, the movie cuts away to yet another scene of Hulk and Thor bantering on Sakaar. The fact that Hela spends the whole movie in Asgard and Thor and Loki spend most of the movie on Sakaar, means that the main threat in the film always feels very distant and disconnected. Idris Elba is wasted here too, having barely any dialogue and a very dull subplot. Jeff Goldblum is used purely as a gimmick and again is wasted by not having anywhere near enough screen time. I normally like seeing Tessa Thompson in things, but even she phones it in here. Then, at the end of the movie, it is like the filmmakers suddenly remembered, ‘oh that’s right we need to conclude that Ragnarok subplot that we started at the beginning of the movie.’ You know the goddamn title of the movie? And so Surtur destroying Asgard gets tacked on at the end to sort of bring a conclusion to all of the other multiple subplots and lazily wrap up the movie. The sheer amount of ideas that they attempted to incorporate here, causes a number of elements of the movie’s plot to feel underdeveloped and although most of these separate parts could have worked if they were split up and fleshed out, here they all just end up falling flat by the end of the movie making the film feel anti-climatic as a whole. Don’t get me wrong, there is also a lot here that works too. I thought the cameos from Matt Damon, Luke Hemsworth and Sam Neill was awesome. I liked the Doctor Strange appearance. I like how they had Thor lose his eye and I especially like how they managed to keep that out of all of the trailers and marketing. The trailers did ruin some things though, if we didn’t already know that Mjolnir was going to get destroyed through seeing the trailers, it would have had more of an impact and all the talk about the vicious rival that Thor would have to face in the gladiator ring would have been way more effective if we didn’t already know that it was going to be the Hulk. Let’s end things on a high note, the visuals were spectacular and this movie is worth going to see in theatres just for this alone. The CGI was incredible and the soundtrack was pretty great too. Overall this is still a very fun movie, even if it is a little bit all over the place. Review – Marvel’s Silk #1

SUMMARY Marvel’s Silk #1 (2021) is the first issue of a new Spider-Man spin off, written by Maurene Goo and illustrated by Takeshi Miyazawa with colouring from Ian Herring. Kept away from her family in a bunker beneath the city of New York due to a familiar bite from an unfriendly neighbourhood spider, Cindy Moon emerges to find her place in the world. Striking a balance between her double life behind her brother’s back as an investigative journalist for one J Jonah Jameson by day and as a webshooting wonder woman by night known as Silk. When Cindy weaves her own web of journalistic intrigue through a suspicious business operation, her double life intertwines.  ART Right off the bat, the design of Silk resembles that of Kitana from Mortal Kombat or Pyslocke of the X-Men if they inhabited the Venom symbiote suit. Neat!  However, the cover art depiction of Cindy Moon differs from her look within the comic. Minor details that overall don’t break the consistency of the character but are noticeably different when compared.  Despite an overall balance of witty humor and kick-ass action, there are foreshadowing panels of graphic imagery hinted at in small doses which will make for added suspense as the story progresses and deepens.  WRITING Avid fans of the Spider-Man franchise will be happy to know that the dialogue keeps within the web of beloved Spider-Humor while presenting fresh tonalities. All of the funny comebacks with none of the groan inducing pans! The family dynamic of living a double life is given a unique and interesting spin, the usual pairing of aunt and nephew is replaced with a brother and sister relationship which on the surface has a lot more character development possibilities already alluded to.  Our black widow badass, Silk, is just as much of a badass in the daytime as the woman behind the web, Cindy Moon. Shutting down haters with spidey-sense-like instincts firing off quick burns and roasting retorts. Who says superheroes need to lose their edge when the mask comes off? She even takes jabs at Mr. McPictures of Spider-Man himself! Perhaps to some controversy, it appears as though the monotonous mantra of “with great power comes great responiblah blah blah!” has been dumped in the trash heap of overused hero taglines. In its place is an intriguing message “I’ve been in a bunker for over a decade, so I’m gonna enjoy what I earn.”. Granted, it doesn’t have the same ring to it but in an age of embracing the art of self-care, this is a very relatable message.  OVERALL In conclusion, Marvel’s Silk #1 (2021) delivers a lot of detail and character in short succession and sticks the landing flawlessly in its immersive story. As mentioned before, this is a worthy entry to the Spider-Verse with a refreshing spin on the world of webslinging.
