Marvel Reveals Details for Free Comic Book Day 2021

Free Comic Book Day

Free Comic Book Day took on a new form in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead of just being a one-day event, it was instead a season long one. The yearly celebration of all things comic book will come back in 2021 in a major way and Marvel Comics have announced what they will be doing to celebrate the event.

It was confirmed in a press release earlier today that Marvel will be publishing not one, but two titles for the event. Each of the two issues will contain two separate stories that aim to “provide perfect entry points for new readers to the thrilling ongoing sagas of the Avengers, Spider-Man, Venom, and the Hulk.”

In addition, it was teased by writers Jason Aaron and Chip Zdarsky that “many more surprises” are in store to help bring the two free stories to life, along with incredible artwork by artists such as Iban Coello and Greg Smallwood. The two stories will be titled “Free Comic Book Day 2021: Avengers/Hulk” and “Free Comic Book Day 2021: Spider-Man/Venom” respectively.

Although FCBD traditionally takes place on the first Saturday in May, FCBD 2021 will instead take place on the 14th of August. This means that retails will have until Monday the 7th of June to order in their copies of the free issues. This year’s event will also mark the 20th anniversary of FCBD.

“I am so happy to be making this announcement today and so proud of our work with retailers and vendors these last 20 years to bring more awareness to the comic books we all love,” said Geppi Family Enterprises President, Chairman & CEO Steve Geppi in an earlier statement. “In the past two decades, fans have experienced some truly remarkable Free Comic Book Day events because of the commitment of our partners to create an incredible celebration of comics. It’s such an energizing day and we look forward to making our 20th anniversary celebration the best one yet!”

Free Comic Book Day founder Joe Field added that, “Celebrating 20 years of FCBD is a fantastic milestone. Free Comic Book Day has been the introduction to comics for so many and while the world has changed over these last 20 years, our love of comics and the power of comics to entertain and enlighten is stronger than ever. I’m thrilled we’re focusing on a fun-filled worldwide single-day FCBD again for 2021. I can’t wait to see all the first-time comic-curious readers, as well as our long-time faithful fans come together once again.”
