Book #1

Ten years ago, the massacre known as Fools’ Night claimed the lives of Batman, The Joker, Nightwing, and Commissioner Gordon…and sent Selina Kyle, the Catwoman, to prison. A decade later, Gotham has grown up—it’s put away costumed heroism and villainy as childish things.

The new Gotham is cleaner, safer…and a lot less free, under the watchful eye of Mayor Harvey Dent and his Batcops. It’s into this new city that Selina Kyle returns, a changed woman…with her mind on that one last big score: the secrets hidden inside the Batcave! She doesn’t need the money—she just needs to know…who is “Orpheus?”

Artist/Writer: Cliff Chiang

Gotham has changed, after ten years under Mayor Dent crime has all but been wiped out by his army of Bat-Cops and it’s to this paradise that Selina returns after being accused of the murder of Batman on Fool’s Night. The city has changed and Selina doesn’t like it, but thirty years as the Catwoman have wrecked her knees and back meaning she’s at Dent and Gotham’s mercy.

Batman’s final word to Selina was Orpheus and she tracks down both Barbara Gordon as well as Penguin and Croc to help get to the bottom of what happened on that fateful night.

Chiang’s story is very much in the vein of Miller’s The Dark Knight, where a weary retired costumed hero has to show the world why they needed them. Driven by the ghosts of that night Selina may wish she stayed in prison.

His artwork is amazing and as expected adds another layer to the rich script he has written. You can hear every crack and creak of Selina’s tired bones as she finally comes back out of retirement.

Overall Thoughts

The story of a returning hero has never looked better and seems to surpass even the Dark Knight in its deep rich plot. The question though is Selina the Cat or the Mouse and can the series keep the pace and energy over the next few books if this is anything to go by the answer is yes!

T'was a cold dark night in East Kilbride... and below the roundabouts, something old and ancient began to shudder awake. The world would rue the day that it gave the Green Jaguar comics to read!
