Issue #2

What happens when the monster within the shadows awakens?

After being drugged and abandoned on a beach, Marion struggles with inexplicable and frightening changes to her body while her sister, Wendy, continues to try to fit in with the other women at the commune.

As they both learn more about the commune and its mysterious leader, Diana Spiro, each new revelation brings the true nature of her motivations and teachings to light.

Writer: Jude Ellison S. Doyle

After the last shocking issue which saw Marion drugged and raped by a group of men, we see her descent both mentally and physically. Cut off from the group she’s sheltering in her room but at least her diet has a lot of meat… raw meat.

Wendy and Marion finally get to meet Diana and she tells them of her vision of a female deity that will consume the gods of men.

Doyle’s dark and forbidding style of writing leaves as much open to interpretation as what she writes, creating a growing sense of horror. Marion though seems to be manipulated as much by Diana and the cult as by the men that have treated her badly.

Artist: A.L. Kaplan

Kaplan’s artwork is visceral and raw, showing a vulnerable Marion literally falling apart piece by miserable piece. The final pages of the issue, set on a beach leaves you with an uncomfortable sense of growing horror.

Overall Thoughts

This issue is all about transformation after horrific brutality. Marion’s suffering and pain are being amplified by the Island with horrific results. The creative team do not shy away from the uncomfortable but all too real crime of rape and how if impacts both its victims and wider society.

T'was a cold dark night in East Kilbride... and below the roundabouts, something old and ancient began to shudder awake. The world would rue the day that it gave the Green Jaguar comics to read!
