Go Go Power Rangers!

Over the past five years Boom! Studios have been kicking other publishers’ bottoms with its amazing and slightly cheesy Mighty Morphin titles! in 2016, the Shattered Grid was moving out of some retailers at a rate of 800 copies an hour! Boom keeps up the energy and domination of the comics market in 2020 with its split titles of Mighty Morphin and twin comic Power Rangers! Launched in the same month.

Bleeding Cool reported that curiously in October 2020 the sister title Power Rangers outsold the main Mighty title by a whopping 25% or 62,000 units!

After five years of consistently publishing and refreshing the Power Rangers franchise, Boom seems to have accomplished what previous publishers – Marvel and Image were never able to achieve… make Power Rangers a mainstay superhero comic book franchise!

The comic sold out everywhere and lead to some of the best covers of 2020 with cover art reprints bumping up sales every few weeks. The title finished 2020 in the top ten of the most funded projects on Kickstarter with an eye-watering $500,000!!

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers!

But…was it worth all the hype and reprints (including this limited edition Hard Cover?) let’s break down the two stories in the first issue and have a wee look.

Two New Series, Two New Teams – The UNLIMITED POWER Era Begins!

Who stole the Dragon Coin, became the new Green Ranger, and are they friend… or foe? Ryan Parrott points the Mighty Morphin team on a collision course with an even deadlier Lord Zedd, who has a new mission and a new motivation – one that will change everything you thought you knew about our heroes! But even if the Mighty Morphin team can all find a way to survive Zedd and their mysterious new enemies, they may discover the greatest threat to their future is the shocking secret of Zordon’s past!

Meanwhile… Battling a new cosmic threat that the original Power Rangers, (now known as the Omega Rangers Jason, Trini, and Zack) can’t hope to defeat! But their secret weapon could be the villainous Lord Drakkon (Mirror Universe version of Tommy!) When Zordon forbids the Omega Rangers from contacting Drakkon, if they want to save the universe then they’ll have to go rogue – and go up against their Mighty Morphin allies.

New, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers….!!

As expected the artwork is bright and joined up Marco Renna (MM) and Francesco Mortarino (PR.) Fans of the past five years know what they are getting and the look and feel mirror the bright and colourful Saban show it is based on. There are lots of close-up and full-page panels to marvel at and if you were one of the lucky ones to get the first printing it might be worth asking your local retailer about getting it graded and sealed as it will go up in value!

Bringing the two issues together and setting the pages to the correct chronological helps new readers. The first issue of MM still starts mid-story with the Dragon Coin gone and no idea who the Green Ranger is? It will take three more issues to build up the shocking (ahem) reveal that he is…well that’s for another review! The issue features 121 pages with a stunning 37 pages set aside for the myriad of print run covers. It takes about 35 minutes to read and is set for moderate readers.

Get out and about to your local comic shop and try and pick up this issue if there are any copies left.

Print copies are scheduled to be available in April 2021. From local comic book shops (use comicshoplocator.com to find the nearest one), or at the BOOM! Studios webstore. Digital copies can be purchased from content providers like comiXology, iBooks, Google Play, and Madefire.

Have a sneak preview of the first few pages from our friends at Boom Studios!!

T'was a cold dark night in East Kilbride... and below the roundabouts, something old and ancient began to shudder awake. The world would rue the day that it gave the Green Jaguar comics to read!
