Intro

EASTON NEWBURN is a private detective without loyalties, investigating conflicts between rival crime factions while collecting enemies along the way. In this DEBUT ISSUE, a man is murdered after stealing from his own mafia family, but they aren’t the ones who ordered the hit…

This new ONGOING SERIES from CHIP ZDARSKY (Daredevil) and JACOB PHILLIPS (THAT TEXAS BLOOD) features a riveting backup story, “BROOKLYN ZIRCONIA,” by rising stars NADIA SHAMMAS and ZIYED YUSUF AYOUB!

Writing

The man, the myth, the legend that is Chip Zdarsky returns with another amazing book. Whilst his work on Stillwater for Image Comics this year has been thoroughly enjoyable, it is Newburn that has really made me sit up and take notice immediately. The first thing that struck me was how the book was narrated, as it’s by an unknown character. And this only adds to the mystery of the protagonist Easton Newburn, making the book even more intriguing. Issue #1 and I’m totally invested Chip Zdarksy, show me more.

Artwork

Jacob Phillips should be a name that people are familiar with. And if not, head out and pick up That Texas Blood straight away! The artwork is stylistic and pairs perfectly with Zdarsky’s fantastic storyline. Phillips really excels in capturing that noir feel to the story. And it’s been a while since I’ve picked up a book that the artist covers all bases in terms of overall artwork but Phillips knocks it out the park and then some.

Overall

What a fantastic first issue. A gritty noir book with a highly original storyline that draws you in from the get-go. Fans of crime/thriller books should have this on their radar and if not, why not? If the names Chip Zdarsky and Jacob Phillips aren’t enough to catch your attention, then this superb storyline should do the trick. Without doubt, my pick of the new releases this week.
