Issue #3

In the waning days of World War Two, with the Allies advancing, a desperate Nazi officer unearths an ancient force of evil that he hopes will turn the tide of battle: a vampire. To test the power of his secret weapon, he unleashes the monster on an unsuspecting group of Allied POWs. It’s up to Nocona, a Comanche language expert, to communicate with the vampire to find out what it really wants.

Writer: Rob Williams

As the end of the war approaches with the Allies, the Nazi Commandant must strike a deal with Nocona. Meanwhile, the other prisoners reach the sewer pipe to Shawshank themselves out of the prison in a river of shit. McCallum though is losing grip of his command of the prisoners and they all think Nocona will tell the guards about the tunnel, but in the beast’s pit, Nocona and the vampire might just be formulating their own plan.

I love how Williams is humanising the vampire, creating an unusual alliance that could turn against Nocona but with homophobic prisoners and psychopathic guards he doesn’t have much choice.

Artist: Will Conrad

Finally, Conrad allows us to see the vampire in all its glory and the pages where Nocona agrees to a pact with the creature are the finest in the book. The mix and match between the Nazi and the Creature talking help the reader feel in Nocona’s shoes.

Overall Thoughts

AWA are punching well above their weight with killer series like this and the phenomenal Crinson Cage! Conrad and Williams partnership though shows how simple ideas can still make a major impact and this series will be talked about for years.

T'was a cold dark night in East Kilbride... and below the roundabouts, something old and ancient began to shudder awake. The world would rue the day that it gave the Green Jaguar comics to read!
