Intro

Stetson is a nightmare hunter. A dream detective. She runs a shoddy back-alley business where she helps clients sleep at night by entering their dreams and killing their nightmares. But Stetson’s past comes back to haunt her when she tracks down a literal living nightmare—a serial killer that murders people in their sleep.

SLUMBER is an ongoing series from the twisted minds of writer TYLER BURTON SMITH (Kung Fury, Child’s Play) and rising-star artist VANESSA CARDINALI.

Writing

Tyler Burton Smith has brought his creative writing to comic books with his first offering, SLUMBER. And what a twisted tale it is! What do you do when you have a recurring nightmare that you want rid of, you call the Dream Eater. And what starts as a basic murder investigation becomes a nightmarish trip between the dream and waking worlds. But can the Police trust in Stetson and her back-alley business? This is a fun horror tinged first offering and it’s certainly piqued my interest to see where it goes.

Artwork

With such a twisted tale, you would need some pretty graphic artwork to accompany it. And rising star artist Vanessa Cardinali delivers just that. The artwork starts low key in the waking world with subtle and restrained colouring. But in the dream world, the art is eye catching and fantastical as only a dream world could be. And given the subject matter from Tyler Burton Smith, you can expect it to be on the graphic side.

Overall

Well that was a pretty weird and wonderful first issue. And it should be no surprise that Tyler Burton Smith was able to transfer his twisted mindset into a graphic novel. The question is, why has he not done it sooner? Not only is it a really good read, it has vivid eye-catching artwork. Special mention to the Labyrinth panels! The book feels like an easy read and it’s one I’d be happy to go back to again.
