Review – The Nice House On The Lake #6

Issue #6

The House has an eleventh guest. Reg is here—and that was never part of the plan. Or was it? Everything you know gets turned upside down in this issue…ending on a cliffhanger that will have to hold you until the House reopens in March 2022!

Written by: James Tynion IV

So after six amazing issues, we’re here at the mid-season finale and what an issue. After reg is freed from the other house the last issue he finished by telling the group that there may still be time to save the world.

He brings the group into his house and shows them a printer that prints out all of the conversations they have ever had (we’ve seen these pages in previous issues but never seen where they come from) and then shows goes through a major encounter years before with Walter and Norm in their college dorm. Norm tells Walter that the World should end with people turning into goop, exactly what happened when the group touches any statues.

Reg then tells the group that Walter revealed the world is fated to end, but that Walter has been given permission to keep a group of perfect specimens for his race to examine forever. Crucially, Walter flags that his race will not end the world unless his experiment is a success.

Tynion’s sixth instalment flips the whole previous issues on their head, is this a simulation, has the world ended, can they escape. It’s a masterclass in misdirection and layered reality.

Martinez Bueno shows why he is to go to artist for this type of book in this issue, the double-page panelling on 21-22 where Walter monologues his plan, looks like a puzzle with images just out of sync or overlapping. It creates a feeling of confusion and makes Walter bigger than he has appeared in other flashbacks.

Overall Thoughts

Almost 4 months without the next issue is going to feel like the end of the world for fans of TNHOTL. It’s been a mind-bending, world-altering phenomenon from an Olympic level creative team skillfully laying clues, before leaving us all on a cliff-edge on the final page of issue 6.

T'was a cold dark night in East Kilbride... and below the roundabouts, something old and ancient began to shudder awake. The world would rue the day that it gave the Green Jaguar comics to read!
