Wayne Che Yip announced as the next director for Amazon’s LOTR TV Series.

Amazon have announced that British Chinese Director, Wayne Che Yip, has joined the creative team behind their exciting new series. Yip is to Direct and Co-Executive Produce four episodes of the up and coming prequel to The Lord of the Rings. He follows Spanish filmmaker J. A. Bayona (A Monster Calls) who directs the first two episodes.

Wayne Che Yip has a fabulous CV when it comes to directing successful series. Including Hunters, starring Al Pacino, to multiple episodes of Preacher, alongside Seth Rogan and Evan Goldberg. As well as Utopia, Misfits and Secret Diary of a call Girl.
“It is a true honour to be invited into the world of Tolkien by J.D. & Patrick and Amazon Studios. Everyday I look forward to working with the incredible team here in New Zealand. As we humbly contribute to the legacy of the greatest stories ever told” Yip said regarding the announcement.

What do we know so far about the Amazon Prime LOTR TV series?

The series is set in the Second Age of Middle-earth. Therefore, thousands of years before the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy. It follows, for the first time, the heroic legends of this age. With a huge ensemble cast of characters, some familiar and some totally new. These characters are due to confront the re-emergence of evil in Middle-earth.

Amazon bought the television rights for The Lord of the Rings for $250 million in November 2017. They made a five season production commitment worth at least $1 billion. If true, this would make it the most expensive television series ever made. Production started in 2020. However, the Coronavirus pandemic forced the production to halt until late in 2020. The first season is due for released on prime video in 2021. The second season’s officially ordered back in 2019.
