Intro

Jessica Harrow is dead. But her journey has only just begun! Discover the world of the afterlife, where Jessica has been recruited as a Reaper, tasked with ferrying countless souls to their final destination. But unlike the rest of the Reapers, she has no memory of what killed her and put her into this predicament. In order to unravel the mystery of her own demise, she’ll have to solve an even bigger one – where is the actual GRIM REAPER?

Writing

When a books first few panels have the lyrics to the Blue Oyster Cult song ‘(Don’t Fear) The Reaper’, you know you’re in for something special. And given that the premise of this book is a story about the Grim Reaper, we are treated to a unique take on this character. Gone is the recognised skeletal figure in dark robes and instead we have a kick-ass female character transporting the dead to the afterlife. Stephanie Phillips has brought us a fascinating tale and it looks like being an exciting series. It’s well written, captivating and I for one can’t wait for the next instalment.

Artwork

Given the subject matter of the book, you would expect dark and foreboding artwork. And you would not be wrong. The art team of Flaviano, Rico Renzi and Tom Napolitano combine to great effect in this book. And their efforts only serve to compliment Phillips’ storyline. But for me, what really caught my eye is the artwork for the Reaper’s Scythe. Taking away the traditional looking scythe that we’re accustomed to and replacing it with a living blade of blood red really is a nice touch.

Overall

I’ve really been enjoying the macabre books that BOOM! Studios have been putting out recently and GRIM #1 is no exception. A thoroughly intriguing tale which is well written and matched by superb artwork. If you like death, mystery and suspense, then this should be on your reading list. Even if you don’t, pick this book up because I can assure you that you won’t regret it.
