Square Enix had a pretty pathetic showing at their E3 livestream earlier this month, however there is a chance that they could still have something pretty significant up their sleeve. It could even be revealed later this year if a recent rumour is to be revealed.
The beloved Legacy of Kain franchise has essentially been left hanging in limbo ever since its previous publisher, Eidos was acquired by Square Enix back in 2009. Other than a few small whimpers in the series that were subsequently cancelled, such as the 2016 team-based multiplayer game Nosgoth and the promising-looking Legacy of Kain: Dead Sun, nothing of significance has been announced from the franchise.
That is until this recent rumour was revealed by industry insider Shpeshal Nick. Speaking on the XboxEra podcast, he claimed that this rumour comes from the same source that previously leaked a reboot of the Quake franchise. This source alleges that a remake or remaster of Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver is on its way from Crystal Dynamics.
He also specified that while he tried to clarify whether the title will be a remaster or a full remake, he never received a definitive answer. However, it was stated by the source that this title is very likely going to be announced at some point later this year at one of the major gaming showcases yet to come.
Nick suggested that this announcement could be made at either this year’s Game Awards or Gamescom conference.
As always, these rumours should be taken with a large pinch of salt. It should also be noted that this isn’t the first time that we have heard a rumour of this nature in recent years.
A couple of years ago a rumour went around the gaming echo chamber stating that a remake of Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain was in the pipeline from Bluepoint Games. It was claimed that this remake would be announced at Sony’s PlayStation event back in summer 2020, however no such announcement was ever made.
